Volunteer with Civil Liberties Action

Help turn careful research into useful public action.

CLA is a small, founder-led campaigning project. We are looking for volunteers for three practical roles. These are unpaid, flexible roles: the suggested hours are a guide, not a fixed commitment. Agree any expenses before incurring them.

Research support

Suggested time: 2–3 hours a week.

Find original sources, preserve dates and context, and keep our records clear. Flag uncertainty and conflicting evidence.

First task: document one party’s published donation-checking policy, keeping its date, scope and source link. Do not infer that a missing web page means no policy exists.

Communications

Suggested time: 2 hours a week.

Turn approved findings into clear, accessible posts and short briefings. Keep source links and important limitations visible.

First task: prepare two short explanations of our funding-growth investigation for a general audience.

Campaign coordination

Suggested time: 2 hours a week.

Keep a contact and response log, prepare follow-ups, and help contributors understand their next task.

First task: maintain the donation-transparency request log and identify which replies need action.

How we work

  • Apply the same evidence standards to every political party.
  • Separate verified facts, interpretations and proposals.
  • Protect personal information and use CLA’s agreed public contact details.
  • Prepare work for approval before publishing or contacting someone on CLA’s behalf.
  • Declare relevant interests and correct material errors openly.

No particular qualification is required for an introductory conversation. Tell us what you can contribute and what support would help. Lived experience is welcome; you do not need to disclose health history.

Express your interest

Email the role you are interested in, a few sentences about relevant experience, and the time you could offer. An existing work sample is optional; we are not asking you to complete unpaid sample work to apply.

Help build independent oversight

We are also welcoming expressions of interest from people with governance, finance, campaigning or relevant lived experience who could help shape future independent oversight. No board has yet been appointed. Responsibilities, conflicts and the appropriate organisational structure must be agreed before appointments are made.

Civil Liberties Action is founder-led and is not a registered charity. The founder’s Labour Party membership, funding declaration and limits of review are published in our standards and interests statement.
