Danny Kruger
Role: Reform UK MP for East Wiltshire
“When we see millions of people who are taught to believe something different, who are taught by their clerics that their loyalty isn’t to the United Kingdom, but to the global Islamic community, that your religion is in fact a political allegiance and it’s not to Britain, that is a problem.”
What was said
At a Reform UK rally in Plymouth on 20 October 2026, Danny Kruger linked British national identity to the country’s Christian traditions. He then made the proposition quoted above about “millions of people”, Muslim clerics, religious allegiance and loyalty to Britain.
Context and qualification
Kruger framed the passage as an argument about national resilience and what binds the country together. He said Britain was bound “not by race” but by a common commitment to inherited traditions, described freedom of conscience and belief as fundamental, and said Christianity was the United Kingdom’s “founding tradition”.
Immediately after the quoted passage, Kruger said: “the problem isn’t with individual Muslims. Far from it.” He said Reform could win support from British Muslims by offering “strong values, family, community, country”, before adding that every British citizen’s loyalty and allegiance must be to Britain.
The Guardian reported the speech the same day and characterised it as suggesting that Muslims might find loyalty to Britain difficult because of their faith. No direct correction, retraction or other material response from Kruger was identified at the time of publication.
