Rebecca Davidson
Role: Green Party councillor for Radford Semele and Warwick District Council portfolio holder for People and Organisational Development, including equality, diversity and inclusion
“I am once again publicly asking that you write to [Andy Burnham] and demand that the UK Government ban any countries that are committing crimes against humanity or genocide from competing in international sporting events or cultural events that take place in the UK.”
What was said
In a video posted during the week beginning 19 October 2026, Rebecca Davidson called for countries accused of crimes against humanity or genocide to be excluded from international sporting and cultural events held in the United Kingdom. Her intervention concerned Israel’s qualification for the 2027 World Bowls Championships in Leamington Spa.
Davidson said she had written six times to Warwick and Leamington MP Matt Western asking him to press the government to “ban Israel from competing in any sporting or cultural events that take place in our country while they continue to commit a genocide against Palestinian people”. In one letter, she wrote: “We do not want to see an Israeli flag flown in our town whilst children are being murdered every day by the Israeli government.”
Context and qualification
Davidson presented the proposal as a response to alleged crimes by the Israeli government, not as a proposition about Jewish people. She also said that she had asked World Bowls to require the Israeli team to compete as neutral athletes, comparing this with arrangements applied to Russian athletes after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
World Bowls chief executive Neil Dalrymple said participation and flag decisions were governed by sporting rules and binding requirements, not political representations to an organiser or host authority. He said World Bowls was not aware of any requirement preventing eligible Israeli athletes from competing under the ordinary conditions.
The Green Party and Matt Western were approached for comment in the reporting reviewed. No direct correction, retraction or further personal response from Davidson was identified at the time of publication.
