Reform UK councillor, Colne Valley West, Kirklees
“Just normal (not 3rd world animals) HOW I MISS THAT ABOUT MY HOME LAND.”
Context
The Independent reported on 7 October 2026 that a Facebook post attributed to Tracy Clayton, apparently written while visiting Greece the previous week, referred to “invaders”, shop raids, sexual violence and Sharia courts before using the quoted wording above. The quotation is reproduced from the newspaper’s reporting, rather than a CLA-authenticated original Facebook post.
Response and disputed interpretation
Reform UK disputed the interpretation that Clayton was describing immigrants generally as animals, saying the description referred to perpetrators of crimes such as gang rape and shop raids. The party defended the remarks. Kirklees council leader Sarah Wood said the language went further than she would use but defended what she regarded as the underlying point. Opposing councillors and four local Labour MPs criticised the wording as dehumanising. No direct response from Clayton to The Independent’s approach was reported.
Standards investigation and council response
On 13 October 2026, Huddersfield Hub reported that Clayton was facing a Kirklees Council standards probe into whether the attributed comments breached council standards rules. It also reported that 28 opposition councillors had asked the council’s chief executive to set aside time for a debate at the full council meeting on 21 October. Their letter said the standards process should be allowed to take its course. These are an ongoing administrative investigation and a political request for debate, not a finding of misconduct.
